It’s not often Dr. Husband gets to be in front of the camera. He’s a true Instagram husband, and very patient one at that. But when I was introduced to new ethical fashion brand, Absolutely Bear, I knew it was just his cup of tea.
Born in the home of n4, it’s the brainchild of husband and wife duo Olivia and Nick. Despite having worked in the city for many years, Nick has always wanted to run his own ethical business. Launched in June, its design is decidedly urban, reminiscent of menswear brands such as Penfield and Herschel. Yet, it is produced in a sustainable and ethical way. Genius.
Dr. Husband is already an avid fan. Many moons ago, I bought him a Herschel rucksack in New York. Yet as soon as the Cedar backpack arrived, the Herschel became redundant.
I met Olivia for coffee in an n4 favourite, Front Room Café. We must have looked a pretty sight, two very pregnant ladies with our skinny lattes (our due dates are just a day apart). But, it was here I learnt all there is to know about Absolutely Bear:
Where possible they have tried to make all their clothing sustainable. They sell 100% organic cotton T Shirts, polo shirts and hoodies, and they’ve used tencel in their women’s flared vests. The suppliers they have employed are all members of the Fair Wear Foundation, a non-profit, independent organisation that specifically works with factories to improve labour conditions for garment workers. So we can buy their product with a clear conscience.
In addition to all this, at the very heart of the business is a desire to make a real difference to society. So not only is it an ethical and sustainable brand, they also give 10% of their profit to charity. They do this through The Bear Fund, which gives 5% to The Who Cares? Trust and 5% to international wildlife charity, The Born Free Foundation.
The Who Cares? Trust has been set up specifically to be a voice for children in care, and to help give them a future. In keeping with the n4 theme, Absolutely Bear are supporting the Islington branch, which is amazing as they’ll be able to see the direct effects of their support.
There are also some exciting new additions in the pipeline. New colours on the Cedar Backpack, jumpers for winter and possible kids range. So, watch this space.
