We are Uncivilised

Uncivilised is a capsule range of laid back denim and jersey staples, designed to make our daily outfit choices effortless. Sounds intriguing? Well I thought so too. The brand’s launch is no less that one month away, so last week I went for croissants and a chat with the lovely Lisa and Frances, the brains behind Uncivilised.

Q: What’s the concept behind Uncivilised?

We wanted to create a concise capsule range, where every piece co-ordinates. We took inspiration from the French way of dressing; the idea being that you only need to own a few key pieces, and not having an extensive wardrobe. So though we did lots of sampling, we’ve really stripped back the range to keep it minimal. However, we’ve updated these key items, so the Breton stripe becomes a turtle neck body and the jeans are high-waisted; so contemporary takes on classic styles.

Q: Have you followed any key trends for this season?

We didn’t want to make it all about being ‘on trend’, rather to create good quality clothes that have longevity, and that you feel great in! The most important thing was to make our clothes really wearable. Where we have touched on trends we have thought about the practical implications of wearing the item; our crop tops are long enough so that they meet the top of your high-waisted jeans, and our strappy items have been produced so that you can still wear a normal bra. We have incorporated several ‘one piece wonders’ in the range, items where you just throw on one garment and your outfit it complete. Anything complicated or difficult to wear was axed at sampling stage. So we’ve created more of an urban uniform, contemporary items that can be worn again and again, and not just following the latest high street fad.

Q: What was the inspiration behind your range?

We liked that whole laid back feel of some of the LA brands, which focus on being wild and free and slightly bohiemum, but it needed to work in an urban setting so there is always a compromise. Brands such as The Row and LNA have been important, as well as old Levis 501s and denim icons of the past. Probably because the 90’s was our heyday, you can see that the range has a slight 90’s edge! For SS16, we’re getting excited about the idea of relaxed off-duty wear, the type of clothes you would throw on after a ballet or yoga class.

N4 Mummy Loves

  • Real 100% Cotton denim – say goodbye to elastane jeans.
  • Good quality at a great price – Jersey £35, Denim £75
  • Innovative fabrics and techniques used. Let me be geeky for a moment; coated loop back, tie dyes and burnout to name a few.
  • Uncivilised work with just one factory in Istanbul, they have a great relationship built up over the past eight years; so from a transparency perspective we can relax.
  • Lisa and Frances know their factory’s strengths and abilities, which is clear in the clothes they produce.

If you’d like the chance to win an Uncivilised outfit, then all you have to do is sign up to their newsletter, please click here. In addition, Uncivilised are holding a customer evening in July, so whilst sipping a glass of bubbly you can preview and pre-order the range before it goes on sale, to have a chance of being invited all you have to do is sign up to their newsletter here. That’s two very good reasons to sign up.

And here is a sneak preview of next SS16.
