Do you have anyone in your life whom it is impossible to buy a present for? I’m guessing if you do they are invariably male. Now I find it easy to buy Dr. Husband big expensive items. I’ve discovered vintage bikes cost a lot to maintain and repair. Yet, when it comes to small presents, I am stumped. It’s become so bad that he’s asked for no small presents at all from extended family. Cleary they still want to buy him something, so I have had to set up a secret bank account to deposit money. My hope is that one day when he declares he can’t live without some item I can magically reveal a pot of gold for his purchase.
With Father’s Day coming up on the 19th June, I’ve already started the arduous task of searching for a present. Thankfully I came across a great brand, Ross & Ross, that sells food gifts that are perfect for that impossible man, and they kindly sent us a couple of gift boxes to try.
The Homemade Bacon Curing Kit
Some modern men are absolute whizzes in the kitchen, but not Dr. Husband. That said he really enjoyed his homemade bacon curing kit, as it was super quick and easy to do with impressive delicious results. It has everything you need to make x3 different cures, original, sweet and smoky. The only thing you have to buy is the bacon itself. As he did this in France we had great fun trying to work out the French for pork belly. A note of caution though, follow the instructions to the letter. The first lot he tried ended up mouldy as he thought a cool cellar would do the job of a fridge. Clear instructions come with the kit, or alternatively Ross and Ross’ website have a short video tutorial to follow, to view please click here. At £20 for the kit, I think it’s a novel and great affordable present, and they also have a homemade salmon curing kit as well, yum.
The XL Man Box
This is for the man who enjoys high quality spicy food, but isn’t interested in making it himself. The XL Man Box has two locally brewed Cotswold beers, a couple of packets of Mr Trotters British pork crackling, chutneys and cured meats. As with the curing kit, it comes in a lovely brown gift box. The cured meets and chutneys were my favourite. I used the Cotswold chorizo in a paella and to say it was spicy was an understatement, Daisy had to have hers laden with yoghurt to cool it down, that said, she gobbled it down in record time. The French salami in contrast had a wonderfully subtle smokey taste. As for the chutney’s well my favourite was definitely the smoked apple chutney, which went alongside the French cheeses perfectly. Dr. Husband enjoyed feasting from this box on a picnic with a friend. Let’s just say the beers went down very well.
