I think Christmas Eve has always been one of my favourite days, it’s the anticipation of a wonderful day to come. When else do you get to go to sleep & wake the next morning to presents at the end of your bed? As I’ve got older I’ve always tried to get Christmas Eve off work, as I like to take the time to get in the Christmas mood! This year I’m particularly looking forward to giving Daisy her first Christmas Eve experience. Are there any special traditions your family get up to on Christmas Eve? My family has two doctors and a paramedic in it so it is invariably difficult to celebrate Christmas together! When we do these are the things N4 Mummy and family get up to:
- Writing a letter to Father Christmas. This is when you find out what you should have bought your child/ husband/ sister/mum for Christmas!
- Listening to ‘A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols’ from the Chapel of Kings College, Cambridge with a glass of sherry, 3pm BBC World Service

- Just before bed my Dad (now a Granddad) reads ‘The Night Before Christmas’ by Clement C Moore round the fire with the whole family. He always reads it from a book he was given as a boy ‘The Tall Book of Christmas’ which has lovely retro illustrations from the 1950’s. These days we’re not all always in the same place so it is often read over the phone! Our family isn’t technologically advanced enough for Skype.
- Leaving out a glass of sherry & mince pies for Father Christmas and a carrot for the reindeer – with strict instructions that you need to be able to see the teeth marks from the reindeer on the carrot on Christmas morning.
Please feel free to share any traditions you do at Christmas in the comment section below.
I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas xxx
We have always been allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve! Jonah will get his first present on his first Christmas Eve tomorrow 🙂
In Germany we open Christmas presents on Christmas eve. It is my favourite part of Christmas. Lot of candles and carols. German Christmas biscuits and stollen. We tend to eat a salmon en croute although in Germany it often is goose. Happy Christmas!
