Meyli Miyaru is a lux swimwear brand which reflects a love of the ocean. The first collection was inspired by diving in exotic locations such as Thailand, Maldives, Borneo and Belize. You can see this influence in their prints, which depict brightly coloured fish, corals and other sea life. I really fell for the vibrant colours of their swimwear and unusual but simple designs. The pink one shoulder costume found its way into my suitcase on my recent trip to France, as did the Jellyfish print kimono (both pictured below). The fabric of the kimono is wonderfully soft as it is made of silk, this also meant it was really light weight in the heat. Designed and made in the UK, this is an exciting new brand that combines, quality with the best of design. I caught up with founder Kate Scott to find out more.
Why did you start Meyli Miyaru? Diving in the Maldives I wanted something different to a black wetsuit or plain rash vest, after an unsuccessful search on the internet I decided I’d have to make my own – we launched 2 years later.
Where does the name come from? Meyli means ‘starfish’ and Miyaru ‘shark’ in Maldivian; there is a connection and contrast between the two, symmetry and pattern set against grace and beauty. The brands DNA is from the Maldivian reef where the idea was conceived.
Tell me a bit about some of the adventures you’ve had? I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some of the world’s best dive locations. I went snorkelling with stingrays in the Bahamas whilst we photographed our first lookbook. I fell in love with the Lionfish, a print we used for Collection one in Borneo, diving with sharks in Grand Cayman and swimming with the seals in California. I think my favourite is the Maldives, as the water is crystal clear and you can see a huge variety of life just by snorkelling in a meter of water.
What made you decide to produce in the UK? We have some amazing manufacturers here in the UK, the focus is on quality and attention to detail. I can visit the factory regularly which gives me more control and I’ve been able to build a fantastic relationship with the team that produces the Meyli Miyaru garments.
Do you have any top tips from your adventures? If you ever get stung by a jellyfish use vinegar, it neutralises the stinging cells and relieves the discomfort and pain.
