The highstreet bombards us with every trend going; copies of Gucci’s decadent jewels, Chole’s boho maxi dresses and Stella’s androgynous tweed call at us from every angle “buy me, buy me”. Resolving to buy less but select well, sounds all very well in theory, but as the season progresses my wardrobe inevitably becomes a mishmash of every trend on the planet, and I find that rather than buying the one pair of boots, I have ended up buying three. It can be hard to know what to buy. So this year I thought I’d call in the help of the experts, and challenge them to come up with the item they’d buy for this Autumn/Winter season.
Today offering her pearls of wisdom, we have London based fashion stylist Emma Slade Edmondson. Emma has a myriad of experience in the world of art direction and styling, having worked with brands such as Deborah Campbell Atelier, sustainable knits from Katie Jones, fair trade jewellery Made she also styled the shoot for Fashion Revolution Day 2014 and has assisted celebrities such as Solange Knowles. If that wasn’t enough, in a bid to help prolong the lives of our clothes she has started up Charity Fashion Live. Emma has teamed up with Oxfam to recreate London Fashion Week catwalk looks, moments after they emerge from the runway, using only what can be found in an Oxfam shop. Watch this space for how you can get involved. Here’s what Emma had to say:
Q: If you could only by 1 garment this AW what would it be?
My ‘thing’ is definitely second-hand and vintage. I would scour my favourite London Charity shops for a pair of wide legged culottes, or for a garment I could easily adapt; for example some old wide legged full length trousers, in a nice loud colour or print, that could be cut off just above the ankle and re-hemmed. I think this trend is so versatile and great for the transition into winter. Perfect with trainers or a high-heeled pump!
Q: How would you style it?
With a statement top. A simple classic shirt tucked in at the waist and accessorised with a killer necklace by Emma Ware or Sveva, or with an oversized kitch or playful sweater. I would finish the outfit with trainers as I’m always running around for work.
