Cain killed Abel, Serena frequently beats Venus at tennis, and Kylie has definitely out sung Dannii. Siblings, they are your closest friend, biggest rival, or sometimes both.
I’m one of three girls and despite many catfights growing up; today we are the best of friends. Now, that’s exactly what I hope for Daisy and Laurie. And, I can report so far so good. We’ve had none of the jealously I read about in books, not because Daisy is perfect, far from it, but being only two when he was born she can’t remember life without him.
But how do we teach our kids love each other dearly and don’t end up pulling each other’s eyes out? I mean no amount of shrieking “share, share” or “stop jumping on Laurie” seams to make any difference.
The only thing I do know is that kids learn by example. So, my guess is that it’s actually all about how we treat others. I mean how good are we at forgiving our other halves when they’ve yet again booked a night out and assumed we’ll babysit? Do we really want to give the other a lie in on a weekend, or would we rather keep it ourselves? Or can we say sorry when we fly off the handle at some small annoyance, blaming it on a bad night’s sleep?
If we want our kids to love, say sorry, forgive and share with each other then maybe it needs to start with us? That and some gold star stickers, I mean who doesn’t love a behaviour chart?
