It’s not often I feel over dressed. Since becoming a mum I’ve seriously upped my casual game in the wardrobe department, because let’s be honest when you know sticky fingers are about, washable T’s are the way forward. But this weekend Dr. Husband and I attended a wedding in the heart of Brixton. And for this occasion an item of jersey wouldn’t do. So, I opted for my beloved Mio Dress from Beautiful Soul London, and a pair of nude kitten heels.
When I started as a fashion buyer there was a clear definition between formal and casualwear. Ten years later things have definitely merged. Instead of having different buyers for formal trousers and casual trousers, companies just have a trousers buyer. It needed to change because the way we dress has radically altered. These days you can wear trainers with suit trousers, and a silk skirt with a logo T. And I love it, I’ve never been one to really dress up, it just all feels too stiff and enforced. I like to feel super comfy in whatever I wear. But until last Sunday I had never seen this trend penetrate the world of a wedding.
Yes the men all wore navy suits and brown shoes, that I have seen before, and no the bridesmaids weren’t all wearing the same. Jumpsuits, two pieces and dresses were all worn in an array of beautiful fabrics, colours and prints. That’s normal and I expected that. But it was the shoes that took me by surprise, because very few people wore heels. White trainers, and chunky healed black boots were name of the day. So, despite feeling proud that I’d managed to squeeze my swelling #28weekspregnant feet into kitten heels, I felt decidedly frumpy. I mean, let’s be honest I’d have been much more comfortable in sneakers.
Thankfully I loved my Mio Dress from Beautiful Soul London. Technically it’s not a maternity dress, but the empire line style with relaxed skirt allowed ample room for my bump. Also the silk slip underneath is cut on the bias so fitted over my bump. It’s definitely an investment piece at £450, but for real silk and to be made in the UK that’s actually an incredible price. Designer, Nicola Woods, ensures all her pieces are timeless, made to be loved and worn time and time again, sustainable style just as I like it.
They say trends start in London, well next month we have a wedding in Cambridge, and I wonder if they’ll be any trainers worn there?
