From A Mother to Another

A small boy in the refugee camp in the Bekka Valley

Have you got unwanted children’s clothes vacuum packed under your bed, or hidden away in the loft? Well JoJo Maman Bebe wants your unwanted clothes to help disadvantaged children and to reduce landfill from our clothing waste. Last year Laura Tenison, founder and CEO of JoJo Maman Bebe, visited refugee camps in the Bekaa Valley on the Lebanese Syrian border. What she saw lead her to launch an urgent campaign to give shoes and boots for children living in tents in the snow. Thankfully customers responded with compassion, and as a result thousands are currently being distributed. But as Laura commented, “The situation is dire and the millions of women and children living in makeshift tents are in urgent need of emergency humanitarian aid to help until it is safe to travel home. (…) They left Syria with whatever they could carry. Their children have outgrown their clothes long ago and are often in rags.”

JoJo Maman Bebe’s From a Mother to Another campaign seeks to help the most vulnerable families in the UK and Syrian refugees living in Lebanon, by providing these children with much needed clothing. They’ve teamed up with the Trussell Trust here in the UK and partner charities in Lebanon to distribute our unwanted and outgrown children’s clothing. Jo Jo Maman Bebe’s wish is to see thousands of us Mums and Dads donating. Here are the details of how you can make a difference:

How to Help?

  • Make up 2 or more complete outfits from your child’s little worn, nearly new or outgrown clothes in sizes 0-6 years.
  • Launder and check the clothes make a gorgeous outfit you’d be proud to dress your own child in.
  • Place in a clear plastic bag and label with size/sex/season e.g. 0-3mnth/unisex/summer.
  • Deliver to a JoJo Maman Bebe store between 2nd February and 5th March 2016.

Please note that due to export regulation they are unable to accept any donations which are not clothing. Please do not include toys, hair accessories, sunglasses, jewellery, bags or hats with plastic elements.

As a thank you Jo Jo Maman Bebe are offering a £5 voucher (if you spend £35) when you give two good quality outfits or more. It’s just 1 voucher per customer.

As you’ve heard me quote before, nearly a third of all the UK’s clothing ends up in landfill each year, which equates to 350,000 tonnes a year. A double-decker bus equals 15 tonnes so that’s the equivalent of over 23,300 buses. Wow. By extending the life of clothing by a mere 3 months, the carbon and water waste could be reduced by up to 5-10%, so donating clothing to From a Mother to Another is a great way of helping both people in urgent need and our environment.

A big thank you to all who donate xxx

This is a wonderful idea but why does it only go to 6yrs? Also can coats, shoes or boots be included?

Hi Donna, thanks for your question and comment. Having spoken to Jo Jo Maman Bebe, I understand that there are some restrictions imposed on them in terms of export/import laws, so at this stage they can accept coats but not shoes or boots.

What about those of us who don’t live near a Jojo Maman Bébé store? Can we send outfits through the post?

Hi Sarah, thanks for asking. I’ve contacted Jo Jo Maman Bebe and unfortunately they can only accept donations taken into a store. They say they’d love to open it up and give their warehouse address but it’s just too complicated from a logistical perspective.

Any way people can donate in other countries?I’m in New Zealand – not sure if there’s anything similar being done here, but would be great to hear about it if so.

Hi Tracey, unfortunately due to logistical reasons Jo Jo Maman Bebe can only accept donations to UK stores at this time. I hope you find someone in New Zealand that’s doing the same x

I agree, I think it’s great when a retailer uses it’s ability to reach out to the population in such a positive manner x
