DIY Ripped Knee Jeans

As I looked at in my ‘Get Your Knees Out’, this season denim is all about rips,  It doesn’t matter the style – boyfriend, girlfriend, mom or skinny jeans. It doesn’t matter the wash – smart & clean, acid, distressed or blasted, your jeans need to be ripped!

Now I may hear you say you have jeans in your wardrobe full of holes from years back. Well great! Get them out and start styling them with your current clothes. Alternatively you may want to customise a pair of your current jeans? When I was pregnant last year you couldn’t buy maternity jeans with rips in the knees so I bought a pair from Topshop and customised them myself. It’s really easy to do:

You will need:

  • Pair of Jeans
  • Very sharp fabric scissors (normal scissors won’t give a clean cut)
  • Pin
  • Tape measure
Everything you need to customise your jeans with ripped knees.

Everything you need to customise your jeans with ripped knees.

  1. Put your jeans on a mark a pin in horizontally where you want your rip to be.
  2. Remove your jeans and lay flat on a table. If you want your rips to be the same on each knee you will need to measure from the top of the waist band to the rip on both sides to check it is the same. DIY Ripped Knee Jeans
  3. Decide how wide you’d like your rip to be. I normally do 10cm for jeans with stretch as when on the body it will look bigger. Also, remember any rip you have will grow.
  4. Fold your jeans in half at the knee where you want to cut your rip. customise your jeans with ripsadd rips to your jeans
  5. IMPORTANT!! Make sure before you cut you ensure you pull the fabric on the back of the jean away from the front layer to cut, otherwise you will end up with rips at both the front and back!
  6. Cut a 10cm along your jeans
  7. Voila! You have a new pair of ripped knee jeans!

In true Blue Peter style, and here’s one I made earlier.
