Are you struggling for wardrobe space? Or can never find anything to wear?
These may be signs that you need to perform an urgent wardrobe declutter. As a blogger and ex fashion buyer I have a wardrobe full of clothes, half of which barely get worn. Yes these pictures are of my wardrobe, which I share with my husband. You may notice that he allowed space for about seven shirts and that’s it. After weeks of pulling out my entire jeans drawer to find the pair that currently fits, my husband decided enough was enough. Bravely, he started to clear out my wardrobe and I am so thankful he did!
Surprisingly it didn’t take that long, he did it in an evening. And I had to reinstate a few pieces. But I can tell you that having a decluttered wardrobe has cleared my head and made me feel organised and in control of my life. My two children are a daily reminder that that will never be true!
‘The Average British women hoards £285 of clothes they will never wear. That’s £30 billion of unworn clothes.’
So, if you can identify with any of the signs below, then I can promise you that what you need to do is to declutter your wardrobe. Plus if you are interested in building a sustainable wardrobe, this is the perfect place to start:
Signs You Need To Declutter Your Wardrobe
1. Nothing to wear
Do you have a cupboard full of clothes but nothing to wear? This is a tell tale sign that you need a good clear out. They’ll probably be items in there that no longer fit you, suit you, are worn out or that you just no longer like. All these garments are stopping you from seeing the clothes you do love and want to wear.
2. Occasions fill you with panic
If you’re invited to a party, lunch, wedding and it fills you with dread, then this is another indication that you need to perform a wardrobe detox. A wardrobe declutter is the first step in ascertaining what you need, and providing you with that all-important shopping list.
3. You own items that you haven’t worn in years
We are all guilty of holding onto things that we don’t wear. I still have my university trampolining squad sweatshirt that says “How’s your form on the bed” (did I just admit that?!) plus a dress I wore on a first date with my husband that I no longer can fit into. So maybe it’s time for someone else to enjoy these old favourites?
So here’s a sneak preview of how my wardrobe now looks:
