Do you believe in fairies? If you’re 3 and a half then you certainly do. And who doesn’t secretly hope that a tidy up fairy really exists? The world of make-believe is the privilege of small children. But beautiful, lasting children’s dressing up clothes can be really hard to find.
Dressing up is one of, my daughter, Daisy’s favourite things to do. Her Grandma has a costume box full to the brim of all the ballet outfits my sisters and I wore over many years. Daisy often appears as a rabbit, pearly queen, or even a star fish. But, all these costumes were handmade. Children’s dressing up clothes today do not compare. Yes you can dress up as Elsa, Spiderman or even a flamingo. But, increasingly kids costumes are made from cheap, tacky polyester that looks like it will self combust. So in a bid to build our dressing up box for play and theatrical performances, I’ve been hunting out dressing up pieces that are beautiful and whose style will last the test of time. Here’s what I’ve found:
Billy Loves Audrey
Whimsical accessory brand, Billy Loves Audrey has a beautiful dressing up section. It includes sequin crowns, velvet fairy wings and a magical cape. The Australian based brand can be a little tricky to find in the UK, but online British stockists include Star & Bean and Igloo. Wands start from £13.50 & crowns £9.95. I let Daisy choose the pieces she liked, and with her love for wizards and princesses everything she picked was magical. She picked the magical moon wand, cape and velvet crown and I have to watch out when she’s around or I’ll be transformed into a mouse.
Majula Handmade
Instagram is my favourite place for finding independent businesses that you’d never be able to find through google. And that’s exactly where I discovered Majula Handmade. They’re a Lithuanian brand who produce the most beautiful handmade flower hair pieces starting from just €12. They select noble materials; silk, wool, linen and velvet are all used. Plus there are many different sizes and colours. Daisy’s headband is made from silk flowers. These hair pieces would also be perfect for a special occasion.
The Elf, the Wolf & the Bear
I’m aware so far all the brands I have focused on are very girl focused, so this one is much more unisex. This dragon costume from The Elf, the Wolf & the Bear was given to Daisy by her aunt for Christmas and I think it is excellent. Handmade from 100% cotton by mum of three Anthea, it has provided hours of fun. Her designs can transform children into dragons of different colours, mermaids, foxes and even an elf costume. Starting from just £11, these costumes are affordable and very wearable.
Your Own Wardrobe
Ok so this might not be the most obvious choice for dressing up, but children love putting on our old clothes, shoes and costume jewellery. So when you next sort through your wardrobe reserve a pile for the kids dressing up box. Your sparkle skirt which looked great 10 years ago, will probably give them hours of fun.
I am hoping to add to this blog post as I find more brands that do beautiful dressing up pieces. If you have a dressing up brand and would like to be featured, do get in contact here. But in the meantime if you have any recommendations, please do let me know in the comments below.

I agree being a dragon does rather suit him, though at one point he got his wings on upside down x
