5 surprises: Berrywhite

Berrywhite

As you’re all aware because I love fashion, I normally write about fashion and rarely deviate unless I find a particularly wonderful interior shop which strays me totally off course. Recently I had the opportunity to attend a bloggers food and drinks evening, hosted by Bloggers Hub, and never one to turn down an invite, particularly one involving food(!), I couldn’t resist. It was here I met Andrew Jennings, founder of Berrywhite an organic drinks company. I was pretty impressed with their ethical stance, so thought you might like to know a little more about them. Here my 5 surprises I learnt about Berrywhite, that I didn’t know before:

Ethos

Founder Andrew Jennings says his company is guided by the ethos ‘good for you and good for others’.

Disadvantaged Communities

Good for others? For every Berrywhite drink sold, 10% of the profits goes to the Berrywhite foundation. Sounds good, but what does the foundation do? It supports education projects for disadvantaged children and communities in Africa.

Keepod

How? Berrywhite has partnered with Keepod to provide access to computing for underprivileged and remote communities. Over 2/3 of the world’s population don’t have access to a smart phone or computer. Rather than manufacturing new cheap PC’s, Keepod uses old ones that are thrown away. They then give each user with a Keepod, which is a USB flash drive that acts as a plug-in operating system on a stick. Brain fuzzed by all this computer terminology? Well, in short, this means the user can plug their Keepod into an old computer and have instant access to their own personal computing experience. So one computer can give access to many. Pretty awesome.

Healthy(?)

Good for you? Berrywhite state that all their drinks are organic, have no added sugar, are gluten free and suitable for vegans. The sparkling drinks are made from organic fruit juice and sparkling spring water. Sounds great? Following recent reports about the sheer amount of sugar in juice I am now careful not to drink juice/juice drinks too often. The good thing is that Berrywhite’s drinks are unsweetened but their Sparkling Pomegranate & Blueberry drink has 5.1g sugar per 100ml, which is almost half the amount of sugar of my orange juice in the fridge (10.4g), and interestingly half the amount of sugar in full fat coke (10.6g). There is a very good reason the NHS only recommend one 150ml glass of unsweetened juice a day.

Taste

After lunch, when I’ve put Daisy down for a nap and I’m feeling like a kip myself a cold glass of sparkling juice hits the spot, and is definitely a much better tasting and healthier pick me up than a glass of coke!
