Paris is the city of wine, cheese and love. So, when my husband suggested a trip there I jumped at it. Plus you may recall, the last time we tried to go Daisy ended up in A&E? Click here to read the full story! Well this time we had a little more success. Now, my first thought was that we should try to find an eco-friendly hotel in Paris. However, I’ll confess, I do like a little luxury when I travel and I wasn’t totally convinced the two ideals would marry up. Oh how wrong I was! We found a complete gem of an eco-friendly hotel in Paris, Hidden Hotel.
Beautiful Location
Hidden Hotel is a 4* boutique hotel situated near the Arc de Triomphe in a beautiful area of Paris. According to Time Out, it’s a place frequented by well-healed Parisians who want to escape the tourist crowds, and yet, it’s a great location to explore the city from. We arrived by Eurostar and the metro and as we walked up the steps out of Charles De Gaulle-Étoile, we were greeted by blue skies and view of both the Arc de Triomphe and the iconic Eiffel Tower. Parfait!
Hidden Hotel
Manager Tanya warmly welcomed us with smiles and a glass of bubbly from Francoise at the bar. The décor in the hotel is beautiful. Natural wood, furs, and textiles are combined to create a contemporary, luxurious but also very cosy feel. We instantly felt at home. The hotel’s philosophy of love and respect for noble materials and handmade craftsmanship is evident throughout. It was a welcome change from the sterility that so often characterises hotels. The hotel lobby had a comfy bar, lounge and even a small outside garden.
The Bedrooms
As in most cities, space in Paris is a premium so naturally hotel rooms are smaller than average. However ours was imaginatively designed and the space used incredibly well. We stayed in an Emotion room. The décor was very calming with great use of natural materials, a stone basin, slate tiles and a beautifully carved wooden chair. The bed was surrounded by drapes and it felt wonderful to shut out the hustle and bustle of the city.
All the mattresses in the hotel are eco-friendly and come from the company Coco-mat. They are made from entirely natural materials such a coconut fibre and natural latex. Our bed was incredibly comfy, and my goodnight’s sleep speaks for itself.
Under The Cloth
In keeping with the sustainable nature of Hidden Hotel, I relaxed in these pjs from new loungewear brand Under the Cloth. Designed by fashion & interior designer Jannine, the gingham fabric of the Josephine pyjama bottoms is from high quality cotton surplus, and the seamstress was paid a fair and living wage to make it. The Yawn Sweatshirt is made from 100% organic cotton in a Fair Wear factory. And you’ll be glad to hear, they are über comfy and stylish! Do check out her range of loungewear here, there are some beautiful pieces at affordable prices and there’s 20% off your first order with code NOWOPEN.
The Breakfasts
My husband would say the breakfasts were the highlight of his stay, and I’d agree they were amazing. Freshly prepared salads, fruit, cereals, cold meats, organic yoghurts and pastries greeted us and we didn’t know where to start. My words don’t do justice to how delicious the food was, and there was also the option of having eggs cooked exactly to your liking. On our first morning after our plates were piled high the barman casually asked, would you like avocado on toast? You can imagine our response.
Out & About
Travelling round Paris is very easy, using the metro or by foot. Or you can borrow a wooden bike from the hotel! Hidden Hotel also make getting out and about straightforward by providing you with a “handy” free of charge. It’s a smart phone that allows you to make calls, use the internet and, most importantly, access Google maps.
Hidden Hotel’s receptionists were incredibly well-informed about the area and we enjoyed two delicious, fairly priced evening meals close to the hotel. Gabylou had über cool décor and organic produce & Le Hide was truly French gastronomic experience hopefully one day to be repeated.
We had an incredible, child free, romantic stay in Paris at the Hidden Hotel and I spent my time researching the ethical and eco-friendly shopping there. So do watch out for my Ethical Shopping Guide to Paris that’s due out shortly. Hidden Hotel made it an amazing #parentescape, my only regret is that we didn’t stay longer.
